Why Our Mission Focuses on Women
March is an important moment to reflect on the role women play in shaping families, communities, and economies. With Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day reminding us how far the world has come—and how far it still has to go—it’s a good time to revisit a question we occasionally hear at Street Business School: Why does our mission focus specifically on helping women become entrepreneurs? Why not simply “people”?
At Street Business School, our answer comes from both our values and from what we have seen work in practice.
First, from a values perspective, women and girls remain among the most disadvantaged people on the planet. In many of the communities where we work, women face systemic barriers that limit their opportunities. They are less likely to have access to education, financial resources, land ownership, and formal employment. Cultural expectations often restrict their economic participation or limit their control over the income they generate.
When we focus our programs on women living in deep poverty, we are intentionally reaching those who have historically had the fewest opportunities and the most obstacles in their path. Our mission is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves the chance to pursue their potential—and that means paying special attention to those who have been left furthest behind.
But there is also a deeply pragmatic reason for our focus.
Decades of research and real-world experience show that investing in women creates a powerful ripple effect throughout families and communities. When women gain the tools to start and grow businesses, the benefits rarely stop with them. Women are far more likely to reinvest their income in their children’s nutrition, education, and health. A mother’s thriving business often means school fees paid on time, more reliable meals at home, and new opportunities for the next generation.
We see this every day in the lives of the entrepreneurs trained by Street Business School. A small business may begin with one woman selling produce, tailoring clothing, or running a market stall—but its impact quickly spreads. Children stay in school. Families become more financially stable. Communities grow more resilient.
That is why our mission centers on women. By equipping women with the confidence, knowledge, and support to become successful entrepreneurs, we are not only helping individuals—we are helping entire families build brighter futures.
This month, as we celebrate the achievements of women around the world, we are reminded that empowering women isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s one of the most effective ways to create lasting change. And that is exactly the kind of change Street Business School is working toward every day.
